An Introduction to Display Science for Creative Professionals

Date and time: Thursday, July 17, 2003, 11:30-12:30
Presenter: Charles Poynton

As part of the displayLA conference, I presented An Introduction to Display Science for Creative Professionals:

I reviewed the ways in which contemporary displays form color, and compared these methods with film. I outlined why contrast and color ranges differ between film and various displays, described how contrast and color assumptions are built into various color coding systems, and suggested ways to deal with the discrepancies. I also outlined the spatial properties of images, and explained the dichotomy between bitmapped (unfiltered) and Nyquist-filtered image data.
